Fixtures in battery rooms for vented cells shall be constructed to resist the corrosive effects of acid vapors. Luminaires and lamps shall provide minimal heat output in general and shall provide minimal radiant heating of the batteries. Fixture mounting shall not interfere with the operation of lifting devices used for battery maintenance.
Battery rooms shall be designed with an adequate exhaust system which provides for continuous ventilation of the battery room to prohibit the build-up of potentially explosive hydrogen gas. During normal operations, off gassing of the batteries is relatively small.
Battery room layouts should be clean and designed to maximize space usage. Proper code clearances must be maintained in and around battery strings for required maintenance support and life safety systems. Egress aisles, exit ways, and maintenance aisles also must be maintained.
Where less hardy flooring is installed, a large quarry tile under each leg will help to prevent depressions being formed in the flooring under the legs. Any conventional building material is suitable for the walls of standby power battery rooms. However, any surface liable to flaking should be avoided or painted with a good quality gloss paint.
Battery rooms are well ventilated and dry, with wall and ceiling finishes durable and free from flaking and corrosion. They are generally treated with an acid-resistant paint. This also applies to any metalwork within the room. Floor finishes are generally antistatic. They are laid level beneath batteries and access areas.
All electrical equipment or fittings installed in a battery room must be intrinsically safe to reduce the risk of arcing, flashing or ignition. The ventilation fans shall be provided with the single-phase squirrel-cage induction type motors suitable for direct-on-line starting. These shall be Class I Division II ‘non-sparking’ motors.
