Space solar power station (SSPS) are important space infrastructure for humans to efficiently utilize solar energy and can effectively reduce the pollution of fossil fuels to the earth’s natural environment. As the energy conversion system of SSPS, solar array is an important unit for the successful service of SSPS.
This study evaluates the potential benefits, challenges, and options for NASA to engage with growing global interest in space-based solar power (SBSP).
Countries with non-space-based power beaming efforts are not included. The idea of SBSP is not new to NASA, which conducted feasibility studies first in the 1970s (NASA & DoE, 1980) and again in the 1990s (Mankins, A fresh look at space solar power: New architectures, concepts and technologies, 1997).
In addition, when the solar array supplies power to an SSPS, owing to the large size of the space facility, the solar array cannot be oriented vertically to the sun, causing the electrical output characteristics of each power generation unit to no longer be consistent and affecting the dynamic balance of the power system .
Missions to Earth orbit and the inner Solar System typically use solar panels that are rigid, heavy, and large in size. This can be a problem for smaller space missions, which often need to choose between higher launch costs or less available power. The available volume within a given launch vehicle can also be a limiting factor.
