CATL, ranking as the third largest sodium-ion battery producer in China, is poised to unveil its dedicated mass production line for sodium-ion batteries with a capacity of 1.8GWh by the conclusion of 2023, contributing significantly with 13.3% of the nation's total production capacity.
Xu Yanhua, secretary of the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance, said that until 2030, the country's power battery industry will still be dominated by high-energy-density liquid batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries.
However, their chief scientist Wu Kai said at the China International Battery Fair on April 28, that the firm was targeting small-volume production of all-solid-state batteries by 2027. This was the first time the battery maker had announced a mass-production timeline for the new type of battery.
When it comes to the construction of production lines, China’s sodium-ion battery capacity planning primarily involves companies such as Transimage, Natrium Energy, CATL, Zonergy, Azure, DFD, and Lifun. Among these players, Transimage stands out as China’s foremost sodium-ion battery producer.
Presently, numerous domestic production lines are in the planning stages for implementation, with China taking a leading role in the mass production of materials and batteries.
Additionally, China’s solid-state battery technical routes are diverse, with a focus mainly on semi-solid/state-liquid hybrids, with semi-solid-state battery achieving small-scale production and adoption in vehicles, but investment in ASSB remains insufficient in China, and resources are dispersed.

The solid-state batteries produced by Qing Tao Energy Development have an energy density of 400 Wh / kg compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries with a maximum of 200 Wh / kg.
