What is the photocell of a spectrophotometer

How does a photocell work?

A photocell (Fig. 1.3) is a photoelectric device which converts light energy into electrical energy. This is then amplified, detected and recorded. The photons strike on a photoelectric cathode in vacuum, causing emission of electrons which is proportional to the intensity of radiation, in photocells.

What does a spectrophotometer measure?

The spectrophotometer refers to an instrument that measures the absorbance of the test sample at a specific wavelength by measuring the amount of light transmitted by the sample. This device contains several components like a light source, collimator, monochromator, cuvette, light detector, and digital meter.

What are the components of a spectrophotometer?

The main components of a spectrophotometer are the light source, a device that separates the light into component wavelengths, a sample holder and a detector. Image 5: It is an example of a visible light spectrophotometer. Image 6: The image above is an example of a UV/visible spectrophotometer.

What is the spectrophotometer principle?

The spectrophotometer principle depends upon the Beer-Lambert law, which states that a beam of light incidents on the homogenous solution, reflects some fraction of incident light, absorbs some light and transmits the remaining light through the solution.

How does a spectrophotometer work?

With the use of such a device, the person using a spectrophotometer can easily acquire spectra of shining white light on a given sample thereby measuring the light that is returned from the sample. The device is used in many different fields, especially in the production facilities and scientific laboratories.

What is the difference between a spectrophotometer and a calorimeter?

A spectrophotometer uses a prism to separate light and a calorimeter uses filters. Both are based on a simple design, passing light of a known wavelength through a sample and measuring the amount of light energy that is transmitted. This is accomplished by placing a photocell on the other side of the sample.
