This document provides standards for battery room design and operation. It outlines requirements for civil construction including fire resistance of walls and floors, as well as plumbing, ventilation, electrical systems, and safety/maintenance.
The hazardous area classification for a battery room is required due to the potential presence of hydrogen gas (Group B). The key questions to be asked and answered are presented to determine the hazardous area classification of both the interior and exterior of a battery room.
Battery rooms shall be designed with an adequate exhaust system which provides for continuous ventilation of the battery room to prohibit the build-up of potentially explosive hydrogen gas. During normal operations, off gassing of the batteries is relatively small.
Fixtures in battery rooms for vented cells shall be constructed to resist the corrosive effects of acid vapors. Luminaires and lamps shall provide minimal heat output in general and shall provide minimal radiant heating of the batteries. Fixture mounting shall not interfere with the operation of lifting devices used for battery maintenance.
Battery rooms shall be dry, well lit, well ventilated and protected against the ingress of dust and foreign matter. c. Battery rooms with different types of electrolyte shall not be installed in the same room.
escape path (minimum width of 600 mm) during emergency conditions. g. Battery rooms shall provide for future plant expansion or refurbishment and therefore should be located at the end of the building. Battery rooms should be situated close to the associated loads and power electronic equipment.
