Global demand for lithium-Ion batteries to power electric vehicles and energy storage has seen exponential growth, increasing from just 0.5 gigawatt-hours in 2010 to around 526 gigawatt hours a decade later.
For instance, the UK has well-established firms that produce sodium-ion batteries, such as Faradion, as well as mature suppliers of materials and equipment to produce lithium-ion batteries that could also cater to this new technology.2
The report also recommended that the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards should consider “whether e-micromobility and lithium-ion batteries that power them should be subject to mandatory third-party certification and approval processes to reach the UK market”, as is already the case in New York City in the US.7
The House of Lords is scheduled to debate the Lithium-ion Battery Safety Bill [HL] at second reading on 6 September 2024. The bill is a private member’s bill sponsored by Lord Redesdale (Liberal Democrat). It would provide for regulations concerning the safe storage, use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
The UK will be a world leader in sustainable design, manufacture, and use of batteries, underpinned by a thriving battery innovation ecosystem. The strategy was developed with the UK Battery Strategy Taskforce, drawing on the Call for Evidence [footnote 78] and engagement with businesses and stakeholders.
Lithium-ion batteries are also used as part of battery energy storage systems (BESS), which enable energy, including from renewable sources, to be stored and released when power is needed.
