In summary, polymers are omnipresent in modern day commercial batteries and in battery research activities. One important component of batteries is the separator. While porous separators have been commercially available for a long time, gel–polymer electrolytes and solid polymer electrolytes are emerging areas for lithium-ion battery technology.
This Perspective aims to present the current status and future opportunities for polymer science in battery technologies. Polymers play a crucial role in improving the performance of the ubiquitous lithium ion battery.
None of the above-mentioned batteries would work without polymers. Polymers can be found in the electrodes, where they act as binders, ensuring a good adhesion and contact among the different materials. Furthermore, many membranes are based on polymers.
While some challenges remain, a great progress has been made since the first electrochemically active polymers were developed. In contrast to conventional, metal-based batteries, they are more environmentally benign in both production and disposal, cheaper and can be charged and discharged more quickly.
Furthermore, functional polymers play an active and important role in the development of post-Li ion batteries. In particular, ion conducting polymer electrolytes are key for the development of solid-state battery technologies, which show benefits mostly related to safety, flammability, and energy density of the batteries.
Rational designs of solid polymer electrolytes with high ion conduction are critical in enabling the creation of advanced lithium batteries. However, known polymer electrolytes have much lower ionic conductivity than liquid/ceramics at room temperature, which limits their practical use in batteries.
