A capacitor is usually made up of two conductive electrodes in which an insulating material called dielectric separates them as shown in (Fig. 9.6). Applied voltage causes electric charge to be gathered on the surface of the electrodes which are isolated by the dielectric layer, hence, generating an electric field.
The basic structure of a capacitor is two electrodes (metal plates) facing each other. Applying a DC voltage (V) to the two electrodes, the electrons instantly gather on one of the electrodes, the electrode is negatively charged, and the other electrode is in a state of insufficient electrons, which is positively charged.
The formation of double layers is exploited in every electrochemical capacitor to store electrical energy. Every capacitor has two electrodes, mechanically separated by a separator. These are electrically connected via the electrolyte, a mixture of positive and negative ions dissolved in a solvent such as water.
The working principle of the capacitor is that the electric charge will move under the force in the electric field. When there is a medium between the conductors, the electric charge will be prevented from moving and the electric charge will accumulate on the conductor, resulting in the accumulation of electric charge.
The two plates inside a capacitor are wired to two electrical connections on the outside called terminals, which are like thin metal legs you can hook into an electric circuit. Photo: Inside, an electrolytic capacitor is a bit like a Swiss roll. The "plates" are two very thin sheets of metal; the dielectric an oily plastic film in between them.
Its two plates hold opposite charges and the separation between them creates an electric field. That's why a capacitor stores energy. Artwork: Pulling positive and negative charges apart stores energy. This is the basic principle behind the capacitor.
